Our department has several opportunities to volunteer. Our firemen are trained in several areas form basic scene support, truck operations, interior attack and fire police allowing for members of all ages and abilities. Our rescue squad has members trained at basic, intermediate and paramedic levels. The department also has members who serve on the auxillary.

Once you submit an application it is reviewed by the board of directors, at this time you may be called in for an in-person interview. This may seem intimidating however, it gives us an opportunity to put a face to the application, get an idea of how you wish to serve the community and offer your first opportunity to prove your commitment. The board only meets once a month so this step may take several weeks.
Background check, the department reserves the right to run a background check on an applicant. The background check consists of arson related crimes this check is ran through the Allegany County Sheriffs Office and also may take several weeks.
In order to join the department, you will need to pass a physical. Part of the application will include the release of your medical information to both the department and the county. You will receive notification from the county's workers compensation office with a list of doctors covered for this physical. Once completed we can add you to the roster.
All new members are added to a probationary list. This is a minimum of 1 year. This time is reserved for new members to start their trainings. Many courses are dependent upon demand so not every class may be offered in our area every year. The department does require a class in the first year however we are willing to work with active volunteers to make sure the course you are we require is appropriate for your path and plans for service.

Once registered there are several required online trainings from FEMA, these courses cover Incident Command Structures, there are also hundreds of other online courses for those wishing to expand their portfolios.
The department members meet several times a year to train in house, these trainings include new equipment, new apparatus, controlled burns, auto extrication, hose testing or pumper practice.

The CFR class is where you learn the basics to EMS and is a great place to start for younger members entering the field.
